Senator Dino Melaye was attacked by thugs when he attended the Kabba Day celebration in Kogi state, he has accused the Kogi state governor of having a hand in his attack.
The lawmaker who represents Kogi West Senatorial District was attacked on Saturday while he was heading towards his car, shortly after making a donation for the celebration. At about 11am on Saturday, Senator Melaye arrived at the venue and was greeted by his supporter at the entrance of the venue. The Senator was also seen taking photos with some of his supporters. The Senator was then invited to the podium where he made a speech and announce his 3 million Naira donation before the arrival of Governor Yahaya Bello, who was already in Kabba for the same occasion. Shortly after the speech, the Senator headed for his car, and some thugs started throwing stones at him as he made for his Mercedes Benz G-wagon. The attacked on the Senator left the windshield of his vehicle shattered. In an attempt to dispatch the hoodlums, the security men resorted to using tear gas. Meanwhile, the governor’s security apparatus led by his Aide-De-Camp and the chief details, were at the venue ahead of the governor, who was already on his way to the celebration ground. Our correspondent gathered that Governor Yahaya Bello decided not to visit the celebration ground when he was informed of the attack on Melaye and opted to send his donation of N20m on behalf of the state government. Meanwhile, Melaye has alleged that Governor Yahaya Bello knew about the attack on him. A statement by his Special Adviser on Media, Gideon Ayodele, which confirmed the attack on the lawmaker, however, claimed that his “superlative” outing at the event might have angered Bello and the Kogi State Government officials at the venue.
