A recent study found that excluding one sugary drink per day can have a significant impact on caloric intake. In turn, the risk of weight gain and Type 2 diabetes also decreases.
It is no secret that high consumption of sugary drinks (such as soft drinks and energy drinks) is a key component in the battle against obesity. These drinks are full of calories, have few nutrients and do not quench you – they are basically “empty” calories, meaning that while your stomach will not recognize its impact, the width of your waistline will surely be affected. But for those of us who consume this type of sugary drinks, failure to do so may seem like a heroic task.
The good news? It does not have to be that difficult. Replacing one sugary drink per day can bring remarkable health benefits, according to research by Virginia Tech .
“Regardless of how many sugary drinks you drink a day, replacing just one can have benefits,” said Kiyah J. Duffey, an independent nutrition consultant.
From this side we think “of course drinking less a soda will reduce caloric consumption,” but what makes this significant is that only 10% of the calories we eat should come from added sugar – so chopping on a soda can have a big impact, especially in people whose excessive consumption of calories comes from added sugar.
Duffey added that light juices are a healthier option than soft drinks, but choosing water is associated with better dietary choices and greater hydration.
So what about the beer in the middle of it?
Sales of soft drinks reached the lowest ever in 2016, but it was the diet soft drinks that had the biggest decline.
