The South African Demi-Leigh Nel-Peters is the new Miss Universe

The second place was for the Colombian Laura González and the third for the Jamaican Davina Bennet.

The South African Demi-Leigh Nel-Peters , 22, became the new Miss Universe this Sunday , after winning the final of this beauty contest held tonight in Las Vegas (USA).

The second place was for the Colombian Laura González and the third for the Jamaican Davina Bennet.

This is the second time in the history of the event that a South African achieves the desired crown, after the victory her country won in 1978 thanks to Margaret Gardiner.

The young native of Sedgefield received the crown of the French Iris Mittenaere , who won the title of Miss Universe 2016.

This edition of the beauty contest for the first time introduced a selection by geographic areas : 4 from Europe, 4 from Asia / Pacific and 4 from America, to which were added, four others who were chosen by the six members of the jury.

Of the 16 finalists, 6 were eliminated in a first phase and 10 were left, among which were Venezuela , Spain , Brazil and Colombia .

The Venezuelan Keysi Sayago managed to pass the last cut of five , but only Laura González qualified for the final, although she had to settle for second place.
