The 11 most shocking images of the devastation in California

The intense winds feed the flames of the forest fires that devastate the south of California.

With more than 200,000 people evacuated, the authorities of California declared on Thursday, for the first time in the history of the region, a “purple alert” in Southern California.

Since Monday, southern California has suffered the effects of four fires that have been stoked by dry land and hurricane winds, with gusts of up to 128 kilometers per hour, which feed the flames, making firefighting almost useless.

At least 4,000 firefighters are working throughout the area to try to contain the flames, which extend over a total area of more than 32,000 hectares, according to California firefighters (CalFire).

“The prospects for containment are not good,” said Ventura County Fire Chief Mark Lorenzen at a news conference Tuesday night. “Really, Mother Nature is going to decide when we have the ability to turn it off … it’s pushing hard.”

Conditions are unlikely to improve as soon as this week. The National Meteorological Service expects strong winds to return on Thursday.
