Dozens injured and at least six killed as a train derailed on a Seattle highway
A train derailed and almost fell off the overpass on a very busy highway in Washington, United States. According to official figures, the accident has left at least six dead and 77 injured.
The Amtrak train, a US interurban state network, carried 83 people on board (78 passengers and 5 crew members) when it derailed and hanged over an overpass on Interstate 5 (I-5) between the cities of Olympia and Lakewood at 7:40 am local time. When the train fell, several cars on the highway collided with each other.
For now the reasons why the train derailed are unknown. Today was the first day for Amtrak’s Cascades train to use the route along I-5. According to police spokesmen, this was also the first train derailment.
Due to the accident, the authorities have closed access to the I-5 motorway, through which more than 60,000 cars ply each day. Both Amtrak and the authorities are investigating the accident to determine what caused the derailment.
