Palestinians will seek support from the UN General Assembly on Jerusalem

The Palestinian leadership announced Monday that it will seek the support of the United Nations General Assembly if the United States opposes its veto on a Security Council resolution on Jerusalem.

The Security Council voted on Monday a draft resolution to reject US President Donald Trump’s decision to recognize Jerusalem as Israel’s capital, and it is very likely that Washington will use its veto.

If that happens, the Palestinian leadership will go to the General Assembly, said Riyad al Malki, Palestinian Foreign Minister.

“We are going to demonstrate” to the United States “that it is isolated and that the international community rejects its position,” he said in a statement.

The General Assembly meets in plenary on Tuesday, and has on its agenda a debate on the right of the Palestinian people to self-determination. Unlike the Security Council, there is no right of veto in the General Assembly.

Donald Trump’s decision to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel has received almost unanimous disapproval from the international community, and has generated demonstrations in the Palestinian territories and in several Arab countries.

Israel took control of the eastern part of Jerusalem during the Six Day War in 1967 and considers the entire city as its capital, while the Palestinians want East Jerusalem to be the capital of the future state they aspire to.

Several UN resolutions call on Israel to withdraw from the appropriate territory during the 1967 war and reaffirm the need to end the occupation on those lands.
