What does a manual change have that makes it desired by some drivers?
Evolution in the automotive world pushes us to change some things for others in favour of modernity . Behind were the spring suspensions in favour of the coil springs -in most vehicles-, we changed the crank for a starter and we forgot the carburetors in exchange for the injectors. Is leaving the manual change behind the next step?
The use of automatic transmissions is increasingly widespread and are the almost indisputable choice of many manufacturers for their sportier models , precisely because they are faster, more effective and safer than a manual. Even so, there are a lot of drivers who still want to be in charge of the change and certain brands allow it, although it is becoming less and less usual .
The advantages of an automatic change are many , from the speed or effectiveness in transitions between gears, to comfort (especially in cities or in situations of heavy traffic) or fuel consumption, which can be even lower than what is achieved with one manual.
Now, what about those who still enjoy changing them in gear? Where is the pleasure of changing gears yourself?
Some claim that it is more likely to have an accident with a car that makes it easy for you to go fast and allows you to drive at crazy speed, even without having any idea of driving.
The pleasure of a manual box
If brands such as BMW or Porsche launch models with manual gearboxes on the market, it is precisely because there is demand, however small . And they are precisely these models, such as the Porsche Cayman GT4 , the BMW M2 , M3 and M4 , or more affordable models such as the Mazda MX-5 , Toyota GT 86 , Peugeot 308 GTi or Subaru WRX STi , to give some examples, the favorites of lovers of a good sports car with manual gearbox.
Who says that a sports car has to be just to run a stopwatch in hand? There are those who prefer to lose tenths along the way and forget about the times, in exchange for the satisfaction of changing gears, doing a heel-toe in reductions or getting a perfect exit without the need for the car to have Launch Control and do it all for you.
There are still those who enjoy a mountain pass without the need to shoot as they do in the world rally. Not everything is lap times or pure benefits. There are also sensations at the wheel and, however good they are, automatic changes are sensations that can never be transmitted to the driver .
The future paints black for those who love driving, it’s true. The cars will probably have two pedals (those with pedals) or will drive directly on their own, relegating us to the role of simple passengers. Solution? None, more than taking advantage of the present and not thinking too much about the years to come. For the moment … long life to the manual boxes!
