Taking at least one serving of fish a week could help improve the scores obtained in intelligence tests, and also increase the quality of children’s sleep, according to a new study.
Fish has great properties for the body, benefits that have been confirmed again, thanks to a recent study by the University of Pennsylvania, which has concluded that taking this kind of food at least once a week helps children improve their IQ, as well as a better quality of sleep .
The research, published in the Scientific Reports magazine, was attended by 541 children aged between 9 and 11 year-old from China, who answered questionnaires to report on their weekly diet. In addition, parents were asked to analyze their children’s daily sleep, duration and frequency of wakefulness at night, or drowsiness by day, and all children underwent an intellectual coefficiency test called Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children.
The results of the study showed that children who had eating fish on a weekly basis had 4.8 points more on the intelligence test than those who rarely or never consumed this food. In addition, they also had less disturbances in sleep , which in turn, according to the authors, led to less antisocial behavior on the part of the children.
Apparently, the improvements attributed to fish could be due to its omega 3 content , which unlike that found in seeds and nuts, also includes docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), which have been shown to have wide benefits for health in previous studies. Although the authors affirmed that the new research is needed to know, for example, what variety of fish is more beneficial for children, confirmation of this relationship should encourage more fish consumption from early childhood, even in infants under one year.
