Donald Trump threatened to cut US aid to the Palestinian territories
President Donald Trump threatened on Tuesday to cut off US “hundreds of millions of dollars” aid to the Palestinian territories by implicitly admitting that negotiations with Israel are stalled.
“We pay the Palestinians HUNDREDS OF MILLIONS OF DOLLARS a year and get no appreciation any or respect,” Trump tweeted. “But since the Palestinians are no longer willing to peace talks, why should we make those huge payments?”, he asked.
In 2016, the United States allocated $ 319 million in aid to the Palestinians through its development agency USAID .
Plus a whopping 304 million dollars contributed to United Nations programs in the Palestinian territories.
In a series of tweets, Trump said his government has “taken Jerusalem the toughest part of the negotiation off the table.”
On December 6, Trump shocked the world by announcing that his government recognized Jerusalem as the capital of Israel. His decision triggered a global wave of outrage and protest. For Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, with that gesture the United States lost any ability to serve as a mediator for eventual negotiations with Israel.
On December 21, the UN General Assembly approved by a large majority (128 votes in favor, 9 against and 35 abstentions) a resolution condemning Trump’s decision , a vote that unleashed the wrath of the White House.
On the eve of that historic vote, Trump warned that his government would write down each vote to later discuss what it will do.
On Monday, Trump had already suggested cutting aid from Pakistan , a country he accused of “lying.”
“The United States has foolishly given Pakistan more than $ 33 billion in aid over the past 15 years, and they have given us nothing but lies and deceptions…,” Trump said in his first tweet in 2018.
“They give shelter to the terrorists we hunted in Afghanistan, with little help, no more!” he added.
