Liverpool news: Philippe Coutinho transfer fee strategy revealed in Spanish press
Liverpool are using Barcelona’s signing of Ousmane Dembele as leverage for their fee for Philippe Coutinho.
Coutinho now looks likely to join Barcelona this month after seeing the move rejected last summer.
Liverpool rejected three bids from Barcelona in the summer even though he submitted a transfer request on the eve of this season.
But he is set to get his move during the January window.
And Sport claim Liverpool are using the fee Barca paid to Borussia Dortmund for Dembele as the benchmark.
it is claimed Liverpool believe Coutinho to be a far better player than Dembele and will demand top dollar.
Barcelona paid £124m (€140m) for Dembele in the summer after losing Neymar to PSG and Liverpool want even more than that.
They are expected to receive an offer of £133m and will consider the sale at that rate.
Liverpool’s position on Coutinho has eased and Jurgen Klopp today refused to rule out a sale.
He said: “All the things I could say now would only create stories, I have nothing to say. It’s a transfer window.
“Nothing I could say now would help me, the player or the club.”
Reports today have emerged claiming Barcelona already have a date for Coutinho’s unveiling and hope he will make his debut next week against Celta Vigo at the Nou Camp.
Talks are expected to ramp up from tomorrow and should be concluded by Monday with Coutinho expected in Spain shortly after.
Klopp has admitted he will miss this weekend’s FA Cup clash with Everton with injury.
Liverpool had hoped to agree a deal for Coutinho to move in the summer but Barcelona and the player have demanded the move go through immediately.
