Facebook gets into the music business

Facebook’s partnership with Universal Music Group allows its users to upload songs to videos without infringing copyright.

Mark Zuckerberg has reached an agreement with Universal Music Group (UMG) to allow UMG songs to be used in shared videos on Facebook or Instagram.

According to the technology publication The Verge, if there was no agreement the songs would have to be removed for copyright infringement.

The goal is to introduce “music-based products on the platforms it owns.”

Not only Facebook, the music feature will available on WhatsApp and Instagram as well.

The Verge further points out that Facebook has also made contact with Warner Music Group and Sony Music Group.

In August, Facebook also launched a new video channel called Watch, a platform such as YouTube that, in addition to having its own content, also broadcasts live sports games.
