Rafa Benitez urges his side to earn their chance of FA Cup glory this season

  • Newcastle United boss insists every step away from danger will help boost FA Cup hopes – starting with Swansea City next week.
  • Newcastle United are still far from safe in the Premier League.
  • Mike Ashley Benitez is keen to improve woeful record in the competition in recent years.

Rafa Benitez has insisted he won’t hesitate to play another strong team in the next round of the FA Cup – providing his side continue to climb away from danger in the top flight.

Newcastle United are still far from safe in the Premier League, but a turnout of 40,000 home fans underlined just how much the competition still means to the area.

The Magpies have been woeful in the competition in recent years – and particularly during the Mike Ashley era – but Benitez is keen to improve that record.

After beating Luton Town 3-1, Benitez , speaking in his Press conference, said: “I said I wanted to be sure that we didn’t have any surprises.

“When you play against teams who are doing well in another division – they are doing really well, they have a lot of confidence – sometimes you go with over-confidence and that gives you a problem.

“In the end, it was important to send a message that we wanted to do well, and I am expecting in the next one to do the same.

“But I will say to you maybe at the press conference before because I don’t know – it depends on where we are in the league and whether we have any injuries or any problems.”
