Don Jazzy, Wizkid & Davido made the list of “Forbes’ 10 Richest Musicians” in Africa 2017
Forbes Africa has revealed its list of Africa’s richest musicians for 2017.
Of the top 10, five are Nigerians, two South Africans, two from Zimbabwe, one from Ghana, and from a French-speaking country, Senegal – but resides in the United States.
The ranking is based on several factors such as popularity, album sales, awards, YouTube views, press appearances, investments, advertising and social media presence, according to the publication.

1.- AKON (United States / Senegal)
Born in the United States, but raised in the country of his parents, Senegal. His real name is Alioune Badara Thiam. He dominates hip-hop, pop, R & B and is also a composer, rapper, actor, businessman and music producer. He rose to fame with his first work, Trouble, in 2004 and has since won numerous awards including five Grammy nominations. So far, he has sold more than 35 million albums worldwide.
2.- BLACK COFFEE (South Africa)
Nkosinathi Maphumulo, as his parents called him, is one of the most recognized producers and DJs of house music. His record label, Soulistic Music, is a home for many musicians.
3.- HUGH MASEKELA (South Africa)
Little can be said of the great composer and trumpeter who throughout his career has released more than 43 albums and performed all over the world. He was one of the voices that led the fight against apartheid.
4.- DON JAZZY (Nigeria)
Michael Collins is the fourth richest musician in Africa according to Forbes and the first in Nigeria. Like so many others he began singing in the choir of his church and three years later, he moved to the United Kingdom to dedicate himself to doing what he liked best: music.
Since 2012, he has devoted himself to his record label, Mavin Records , which has signed many of the greatest artists in Nigerian.
5.- TINASHE (Zimbabwe?)
Tinashe is an African singer, actress and composer. Born in the United States to a Zimbabwean father and an American mother, her name in Shona means God is with us. She is the 5th on list.
6.- JIDENNA (United States / Nigeria)
He was born in the United States, to a Nigerian father and an American mother. Years later the family moved to Nigeria where the father was a university professor. From a young age, he began composing songs. After graduating from university he combined his teaching career with that of music until he signed a contract with a record company, which made him opt for music. In his style it shows some traces of highlife, but very subtle.
7.- WIZKID (Nigeria)
Overcoming the controversies, we find what many consider the undisputed king of Afropop. Winner of a Grammy and well known throughout Africa and beyond. Everything he composes becomes a great success. Also, there are many international stars who want do songs with him.
8.- DAVIDO (Nigeria)
This artist is the polar opposite of the previous one. In five years, since he released his first work, Omo Baba Alowo, in 2012, he has made his mark in the African musical panorama.
One of his greatest successes is Aye, a song that tells a love story between a princess and a peasant.
9.- SARKODIE (Ghana)
We became big fans of this artist when he became one of the main promoters of Azonto, that dance step that captivated us back in 2012.
