Germany has created a green and innovative city in nine years

Saerbeck produces twice the energy it spends from renewable sources.

Saerbeck has only 7,200 inhabitants, but here the future has arrived, at least from the energy point of view.

In nine years, Saerbeck, in the region of Nordrhein-Westphalen, began to produce all the energy it spends. It currently produces twice as much as it needs. The houses have solar roofs and central heating systems that no longer uses natural gas. A bioenergy park produces from wind turbines, solar panels and biogas from the decomposition of waste.

The change began in 2008, when the “Future Climate City” contest was opened in the region. Saerbeck designed a plan to override any carbon emissions by 2030 and won the competition with € 1 million incentive.
