Aymeric Laporte is set to join Manchester City for £12m cheaper

Liverpool spent £75million at the start of the January transfer window to bring Virgil van Dijk to Anfield, but Spanish football expert Guillem Balague has said they could have signed someone else for less money.

Aymeric Laporte is set to join Manchester City for £12m cheaper

Van Dijk was Liverpool’s first-choice during the summer transfer window, only for Southampton to complain about their approach for the player.

That meant Jurgen Klopp had to wait six months before finally getting his man and the Holland international made an instant impact on his debut, scoring the winner against Everton in the FA Cup fourth round.

However, Balague claims Liverpool did enquire about another centre-back for this window: Aymeric Laporte.

The France international has a £57million release clause in his contract, but Balague has suggested Liverpool were put off by the price-tag.
And now Liverpool’s Premier League rivals are set to complete the signature of the 23-year-old after agreeing to pay the full amount.

“City, who had three other choices as centre-backs including Evans for £20m and two more, they had a fourth choice and that was Laporte,” Balague said on his YouTube channel.

“So they have decided to go for Laporte. Its €65m plus €5m of developing rights.

“They have not yet agreed terms with the player but they are going to put the buyout clause to the league, that’s what you do in La Liga.
“When you do that, you know the player is willing to go to you.

“What’s interesting is two things. One is Liverpool actually asked about Laporte not so long ago for this market and they must have been taken aback by the money involved.

“They just did not go for him and City, once they rejected the option of Evans, said ‘we’ve got the money so let’s go for it’.”
