Court restrains EFCC from investigating the finances of the Ekiti state government
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) was on Tuesdays restrained by the Federal High Court from investigating the finances of the Ekiti state government.
The court sitting in Ado Ekiti held that the anti-graft agency lacked the powers to investigate the finances of a state, adding that in federalism, the federal government is not an overseer or supervisor regarding finances of a state.
The verdict was shared by Governor Ayo Fayose on Twiiter.
He tweeted: Federal High Court, Ado Ekiti has ruled that EFCC lacked power to investigate finances of a State.
The court said, in federalism, the FG is not an overseer or supervisor regarding finances of a State. That only the State House of Assembly can investigate finances of a State.
Fayose said the EFCC was also restrained from arresting or investigating any official of the Ekiti state government.
“Consequently, the EFCC has been restrained from interfering in the running of Ekiti State by either investigating or arresting any official of the State Govt.
“We will continue to fight for the sustenance of our hard earned democracy, using legal means.”
