Melissa Schumann accused Nick Carter of having raped her in 2003, authorities are investigating the former member of the Backstreet Boys
The Santa Monica police department in the United States confirmed to USA Today that it initiated the investigation against Nick Carter, a former member of the band Backstreet Boys, on allegations of sexual harassment. According to the police report, the victim, Melissa Schuman, filed her complaint for events that occurred in 2003.
The actress and former singer of the female group Dream, currently 33 years old, accused Carter through a tweet that she shared in November 2017. Schuman went one step further and presented a formal complaint to the authorities.
The singer said that the Rape Abuse Incest National Network empowerment movement gave her strength to make this decision. “I’m finally doing what I thought I could not do anymore, I’m filing a police report,” she said on her social account and added the hashtags, Time’s Up and #MeToo, bashtags that have been used by other famous Hollywood celebrities to denounce sexual harassment by powerful men in the film, television and fashion industries.
Nick Carter denied the content of the complaint about an event that occurred almost 15 years ago
Schuman first presented his accusations in a blog post, titled “Do not worry, I will not tell anyone.” The artiste said that the incident occurred in 2003 shortly after she started filming the television movie The Hollow, which she starred with Carter. The actress was 18 years old , while the Backstreet Boy was 22 at the time of the events.
Nick Carter says that his relationship with Schuman was agreed upon
As Carter, the former idol categorically denied the complaint and told USA Today that he believed their interactions had been consensual. “I am shocked and saddened by Mrs. Schuman’s accusations,” Carter said. “Melissa never expressed to me, while we were together or at any time afterwards, that anything we have done has not been consensual, ” Carter said in a statement.
“Then we recorded a song and we performed together, and I was always respectful and understanding with Melissa, both personally and professionally,” he insisted.
“This is the first time I hear about these accusations, almost two decades later,” he added. “It is contrary to my nature and everything that I appreciate to intentionally cause discomfort or harm to someone,” he added.
