The largest engineering work in recent years is about to be launched on the other side of the Pacific. The Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge (HKZM or HKZMB) is finally finished and China is demonstrating to the world what they are capable of doing.
After six years of planning and eight years of construction, the HKZM bridge is almost ready to be open to the public and will serve to unite three of the most important commercial regions in the area: Hong Kong, Zhuhai, city in Guangdong province, and Macao.

The bridge is a wonderful and complex piece of engineering and technology that crosses the Lingding Ocean, one of the busiest sea areas in southern China. Its length is 55 kilometers , of which 6.7 kilometers are underground due to the size of the ships traveling to and from the ports of Hong Kong.
The HKZM bridge is almost 20 times longer than the Golden Gate of San Francisco and is already considered the longest in the world over the sea. For its construction it took 420,000 tons of steel , equivalent to 60 Eiffel towers, in addition to 1.08 million cubic meters of concrete.
The work represented an investment of 110 billion yuan ($15.9 billion) and it was not a simple construction, since security was one of the most complex issues in the planning stage. As a result, the bridge is capable of withstanding earthquakes of up to 8 degrees and supertyphoons , in addition to ensuring that its useful life will be 120 years.
The bridge will be in one of the busiest areas in the world, with more than 4,000 boats sailing beside and under the bridge every day , and planes taking off and landing every minute at the Hong Kong airport. It will also be the first bridge that spans two social systems: socialism and capitalism.
Right now, the authorities of the three regions are discussing the details regarding usage quotas, traffic permits, public transport services, as well as emergency services. Therefore, there is still no date defined for its opening to the public. In addition to that it will first open to carry out tests of all the systems, both for lighting and monitoring.
