Some smokers believe that cigars or pipe tobacco are less harmful than cigarettes, however, a new study led by scientists from the Center for Tobacco Products of the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in Maryland, has warned that the consumption of tobacco in any of its modalities significantly increases the risk of premature death, especially associated with cancer.
In the work, which has been published in JAMA Internal Medicine , analyzed the habits and health status of 357,420 adult Americans between 1985 and 2011. These people either had never smoked or had used only one of the three products mentioned (cigarettes, pipe tobacco or cigars).
The results showed that individuals who smoked only cigarettes had twice the risk of dying from any cause compared to what they had never smoked, and four times more likely to die as a result of a cancer associated with tobacco use, such as lung, bladder, esophagus, pancreas, larynx and mouth.
Cigarette smokers were 20% more likely to die from any cause, and 61% more risk of death from cancer related to smoking than non-smokers, while in the case of pipe smokers the rates were similar, since their risk of death from malignant tumors associated with smoking was 58% higher than that of non-smokers during the study follow-up period.

The researchers wanted to send a message to the population, and especially to the youngest, to prevent them from thinking that some types of tobacco are less dangerous than others. As Dr. Len Horovitz, a pulmonary disease specialist at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City, has stated, tobacco use in any form, including cigars and pipes, is one of the main risk factors for smoking.
In addition, the findings of the study also revealed that participants who did not smoke daily were also more likely to develop cancer than those who had never smoked; in particular, a 6.24 times higher risk of dying from lung cancer, 4.62 times higher than dying from oral cancer, and 1.24 times higher from dying from cardiovascular disease and 7.66 times higher from dying. for COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease) , so quitting smoking is key to maintaining good health.
